She grabbed the our dog and cat and ran over to my neighbor’s house and called emergency services. By the time fire officers tested the house, the monoxide levels had already shot up to 147. The gas company ran all tests inside and outside the house, the culprit was a faulty valve on the water heater. Bottom line: If I had not have bought this alarm, my wife would have went to bed and not woke up in the morning and I would have found her upon returning from a trip. Terrifying thought. Thank you, Kidde for this product. You’ve earned a customer for life. P.S. Please get a carbon monoxide alarm if you don’t have one. There is no odor or taste!The test button works and makes a sound. Testing with a very old car with no catalytic converter... Peak Level reading was 713 PPM and the thing was SILENT the whole time. It should give a series of beeps and alarms after 30 PPM. FACT: At 880 PPM, CO would cause Death within 2 to 3 hours. I understand that sometimes products fail. But not testing their own products speaks to their poor quality control and care for life. Onlly buy this if you want to die from CO poisoning. Rubbish. Pass on this one.
Tonight I smelled something odd in an unfinished area of the basement. I took the unit to that area and left it there for 30 minutes. The display NEVER changed from 00. We opened the windows to try to air out the room. After contacting the utility company, we checked the garage which was above the unfinished area of the basement. When the utility man arrived, the highest rating that his device detected throughout the house was 10 Parts Per Million.Worked very well! And if a CO detector doesn't work, you wouldn't know; instead, you'd just be poisoned while thinking that nothing was wrong. The only way to really find out if it works is to put it in an airtight container and generate CO. Because I like to play with dangerous chemicals at home, I decided to try this out. Adding formic acid to concentrated sulfuric acid causes the formic acid (HCOOH) to break down into CO and H2O. I put some sulfuric acid into a graduated cylinder and placed it in a 1-gallon airtight plastic container. I then added small amounts of diluted formic acid and rapidly closed the container. Sure enough, it worked. It registered CO concentrations that were well within the ballpark of what I'd expect to get with the amount of formic acid I added (using the ideal gas law to figure out what the maximum CO level would be). In high concentration tests, I found that the alarm goes off within 3 minutes of hitting 500 ppm (which is dangerous but would take several hours to kill, giving plenty of time to get to fresh air). In another test, it went off after about 20 minutes of CO levels around 190 ppm, which is dangerous but not lethal. Its peak reading is in the 910-920 ppm range; it doesn't display levels higher than that. It worked well in low concentration tests too. This works down to the 10-15 ppm range, below which you don't really have to worry about CO at all. Prolonged exposure around 50 ppm leads to an alarm after a couple of hours.
Another, simpler test (which anyone with a CO detector should do to make sure it's working) is to light a candle in an enclosed container with the CO detector, then close the container. The candle will burn through the available oxygen and a fair amount of incomplete combustion (releasing CO instead of CO2) will occur as it runs out of O2. I tried this and got 96 ppm with a small candle in my gallon container; a larger candle would probably release more. Combustion of small amounts of acetone (a fairly clean fuel relative to paper) resulted in 300-550 ppm depending on how hot the fire got before I put the lid on; the lower reading relative to paper helps confirm that it's reading accurately. It's accurate, the alarm goes off at dangerous CO levels, it only goes off if CO levels are dangerous, and it might just save your life.I have five different units throughout the house, some use batteries others are plugin models. Everyone of these devices are not the best. They work based on two factors, the concentration of carbon monoxide and the length of time at that concentration. Two units sounded at the same time. They had different number readings but were in the same room. Traced the problem to a water heater with a dirty flame. Fixed the problem and the alarms went silent. I read the specifications included with the alarm and was surprised at the variability these can have. Also one of my older units went bad and ate batteries every 5 weeks. Do your family a favor and have more that one in the house. I have one in the furnace room, two upstairs, one in basement, and a floater that gets moved around. Why I like this one the best. It will tell you if there is a peak level even at 11 ppm. Most units do not. Peak level is important to check once in a while. The digital readout also tells you how serious the situation is. I had a 350 when the water heater went berserk. That means open ALL the windows.
Also the battery models give you greater flexibility when deciding where to place it. Most of my electric outlet plug in models are in places that are inconvenient. I avoided the 10 year battery model because it might make me forget about this alarm, and you should check or test it (use the button) once in a while. For the price and features and reliability, this is your best choice.Mounting screws and batteries were included along with a manual that you should read as it has placement and function details.The plastic blister pack had been previously opened and resealed with a piece of tape. Whoever returned it must have returned it because they had a hard time installing the batteries because the locking plastic latch was severely out of adjustment The advertisement did not state the item I was buying would be a previously returned item. However, the item does function and I will keep it. Definitely not impressed with this buy!!It reached END OF LIFE in only 13 months. I place the alarm on the shelf in the garage, no dust nor wet. I move the alarm to other location and replaced the batteries, still fail.
