Then plug in the power for the converter, turn your TV on and tune in to the converter (CH 3 if your using coax, or the appropriate input if your using composite cables), and turn on the converter - after that you follow about 5 steps of simple on-screen instructions and it's good to go! So far I've really enjoyed the increased picture quality and added channels I'm now getting. I live in the Portland, OR metro area and was getting about 10 over-the-air channels before; 4 of them were very nice signals, 3 were decent, and 3 were very inconsistent. NOW I'm getting 21 digital channels. All the channels I used to get are clearer than ever, and of the 11 new channels about 7 are VERY good signals. Basically these are the features I think are most important to look for in a converter: (1) picture quality, (2) analog pass-thru, (3) remote, (4) connectivity, (5) quality of on-screen guide, and (6) size and function of the converter itself. One odd thing I've experienced: on the fewTo be honest, analog pass-thru may not be important to you if you live in a metro area, as the vast majority of all TV signals will be digital-only after the switch, and if they're not yet digital you don't have to hook up the converter.I did not want YET another remote (already have TV, Stereo, DVD, and VCR). Since channel changes are done thru the converter it's remote will handle that, and it will also do volume to an extent.

The remote has buttons dedicated for most of the converters settings, which is nice so you don't have to go through multiple menus just to change the aspect ratio, sleep timer, or captions. I would have preferred a true universal remote, but can always purchase one later. There is NO S-video or component video output, but my guess is most users wouldn't use either. I don't think I would be upgrading to one of those, as I have no problem adjusting the antenna myself, and with digital channels I have found I don't need to adjust my antenna at all yet.It allows you to see what is currently playing, and what is coming next, on any channel. There are a FEW models that have VERY extensive guides that will provide many hours or days of upcoming programming information, but the majority seem to ONLY display what is currently on. Furthermore, the programming information MUST be provided by your local station, so no matter HOW good the guide is it can't tell you what's on tomorrow if the local station doesn't broadcast that info.I wish it would have NO light on when not in use, but oh well. Overall this is a VERY good DTV converter, but there is a little room for improvement. I would recommend this to a friend Helpful (7) Unhelpful (0) Report Comment Jim123456 Jim123456 Rating 5 out of 5 stars with 1 review Works Great Posted 11 years ago. I live about 40 miles outside Cleveland and can pick up all of their stations except NBC Channel 3 with these converter boxes. I emailed the station director and he said that they will be moving to digital channel 17 from channel 2 and installing a new more powerful tower and that should increase their HD signal to cover our area sometime next year.so at least it wasn't an antenna or box problem on my end. I have these converter boxes hooked up to my old 1979 roof antenna that uses 30 year old twin ribbon wire converted to coax cable at each wall outlet in my house and no booster.

Before, with my regular TVs hooked up to the antenna, I could only receive 2 analog stations and they had a lot of snow. Now, the digital channels come in very clear (better than cable) and I have a good HD signal constantly around 70% to 90% and I get about 9 stations and 12 sub channels. So don't be surprised if you receive more channels than you currently do with these boxes and you may not have to throw out your old house antenna, if your house ever had one. The great tuner, small size, on screen menus, limited TV guide, sleep timer, volume control, signal meter, individual station zoom (and it remembers the settings), well written instruction manual, closed captioning, SAP, and lots of of features make this product nice for a converter. Also, if you have Time Warner Cable, you can re-program their AT8550 universal remotes to control most of the features of these converter boxes. You first have to reassign the CBL button to either the AUX or VCR buttons. Hold CBL and SELECT until they flash, then type 992, then press CBL, then either AUX or VCR (what ever one your not using and want to control the converter box with). This will assign the cable functions to the AUX or VCR buttons. Then hold down AUX or VCR and the SELECT button, wait for them to flash, then enter code 0024. Now the AUX or VCR button will control these converter boxes and you won't need to use the included remote. Other universal remotes with Zenith or LG cable box codes may be able to operate this box as well without the need of the included remote. I'll mainly will use the boxes as a backup when the cable goes out, usually during severe weather, or if I ever do decide to ditch cable TV all together in the future. You cannot order these online from Best Buy, but you can call the number, and they take your credit card info and coupon numbers and ship them to you. Worth it to me.

I would recommend this to a friend Helpful (5) Unhelpful (0) Report Comment REXRACER REXRACER Rating 5 out of 5 stars with 1 review Pleasantly Surprised. Posted 11 years ago. The set up was very easy and intuitive. I only had to consult the instructions for a couple of things like how to program the remote to turn my tv on and off. Optical or component out would be nice on this unit but I'm sure that would have raised the price significantly and besides my older tv doesn't have those inputs anyways. I also like how you can use the guide to scroll back through multiple previously viewed channels, my satellite tuner doesn't even do that! I presume this is how it's being broadcast so it's really not the box's fault per se, but the part that irks me slightly is that every time I change the channel it defaults back to letter box and then I have adjust it back to cropped. Fortunately that function is right on the remote instead of buried in some menu. It deosn't appear you can change the default either though. I would definitely recommend this to friends and family. I would recommend this to a friend Helpful (4) Unhelpful (0) Report Comment MuddyWolf MuddyWolf Rating 5 out of 5 stars with 1 review Good Product Posted 11 years ago. MuddyWolf I installed four of these for relatives with analog sets over the holidays. They are very easy to connect and configure, and the controls and menus are simple to navigate even for non-techies and the elderly. It also has automatic aspect ratio feature so you don't have to manually adjust the picture size when a program changes from standard 4:3 scale to wide screen 16:9 letterbox format. This happens frequently with digital broadcasts. In addition, there is a visual and audible on-screen signal strength meter that makes antenna adjustments easier. This box is made for Best Buy by LG and is identical to the Zenith 901 that is sold by Circuit City and Radio Shack. Otherwise, there's basically no difference. Two issues.

First, I wish the converter had a universal power button that would control both the TV and the converter box. The way it's designed, you must power-up and turn off both separately with two different buttons on the remote. Second, reception is everything with DTV. However even with the new antennas, some stations did not come in reliably. This was not the boxes' fault, considering that these households have always had bad TV reception. But with digital TV, instead of getting static, ghosts, and snow with poor reception, you get nothing at all or a picture that freezes and breaks up into squares (pixelation). Be advised, the best converter and the best TV are only as good as your antenna and the reception you get where you live. Finally, many people who bought the expensive indoor amplified antennas commented on this site that they did not work any better than the cheaper passive RCA indoor antennas like I purchased. I would recommend this to a friend Helpful (5) Unhelpful (0) Report Comment UJ99 UJ99 Rating 4 out of 5 stars with 1 review So easy to set up, a caveman could do it Posted 12 years ago. UJ99 After doing a fair bit of research (it was between this model and the Venturer) I settled on this one. I like to think I am pretty tech-savvy, but the set up was so easy even a neophyte should have no problem. In less than 10 minutes I had everything set up. It pulls in all the channels I used to be able to get, plus some other substations we (obviously) couldn't. And it does this with no more than a pair of the most basic rabbit ears. I didn't have to mess with the position of the aerial at all, but the box has a handy signal strength meter in case you do. Plus, it has analog pass thru which a lot of models (even the more expensive type) don't. This means I can still pick up local low-power stations without having to switch leads around. It even comes with RCA leads, which I recommend using as it really improves the picture quality.

I would have liked more program information than a mere description of the current show and what is on next, but this was no deal breaker for me. Also, the remote seems less robust than I would have liked, but unless you have kids that might throw it around, a dog that will bite it or are just generally careless with remotes and drop them all the time, again, not a big deal. To sum up, the pros are overwhelming, the cons are small fusses. Very highly recommended. BronxMan Yes, the Insignia (NS-DXA1-APT) and Zenith (DTT901) are LG electronic products. They are the same. The consumer report rates the Insignia highly while hitting all the criteria. This gadget missed nothing. I agree, please skip over those negative reviews!!! This product works!! Just follow the quick start guide and you're done in less than 10 minutes. What I love the most is the on-the-tv-screen-signal-meter that shows you if your digital signal is bad or good. You simply adjust your antenna (rabbit ears that's plugged to your digital converter) and watch the signal bar go from (left) bad to good (right) instantly. This is VERY helpful. I live in the Bronx and I used to get only 2 clear channels with my rabbit ears. Now, with the Insignia converter, I get the following 17 (clear) channels (I will be upgrading to an amplified antenna eventually). Digital Channel - StationI could be wrong). I'm not blaming the converter. Here's what PBS has noted. This is due to the reduced-power transmitter Thirteen has been using since the destruction of the World Trade Center. By the way, the sales rep from Best Buy were so very helpful. I went to the store on Lexington and 86th. The internet said it was available there, but when I got there it wasn't, but they did call another store on 62nd and Broadyway.

They were also helpful and they had the item which they were able to hold for me. I'd say go to the Best Buy on 62nd and Lexington on the week day. It was not as hectic. Thank you!! LW777 I bought this converter box last July and I love it. I went from 7 (not always clear) channels to 28 (crystal clear) channels now with the box. I just checked this site again because I was telling a friend to buy the box and look at the reviews. Just had to comment on a few items that people mentioned recently that might help them. For the person that mentioned that the picture was sometimes in a black box in the middle, you just need to change the screen ratio for that channel, just keep pushing the ratio button and you can change it from letter box, to cropped, to full screen, etc. (great feature). You can also set it for all the channels at once in the menu setup. If your electric goes out or you unplug it, you may need to reset it, as I have had it default back to letterbox after I unplugged it once. You do need to have a rabbit ear antenna attached or you may not get any channels at all. I didn't even have to put the rabbit ears up all the way. If the picture still freezes, you may need to just turn the whole antenna a little bit. Also, some earlier reviews said you couldn't mute the TV and get the closed captioning feature. That feature is available through the services button (just keep pressing through that button for what you want). This is a great box and I researched converter boxes for several hours on the Internet before I purchased it. Many of the other boxes reviewed ran hot, didn't last long, etc. My box has been working great for 7 months. Buy it! You won't be disappointed.

I would recommend this to a friend Helpful (3) Unhelpful (0) Report Comment BestBuyDealCatcher BestBuyDealCatcher Rating 4 out of 5 stars with 1 review Good Converter Posted 12 years ago.Scarletandgray Warning. Best Buy has combined the reviews for 2 different Insignia TV converter box models. The first model was the NS-DXA1 which did not have analog-pass-through. The new model is the NS-DXA1-APT which does have analog-pass-through (APT). These are two different machines but look identical. I bought 2 of the units that did not have APT. Many reviewers said they doubled the number of channels received with the first model. They must live in the city. I live in the country, 25 miles from the nearest TV station antenae. I do have a 10' outside antenae mounted on my roof peak. I lost over half of my channels with the non-APT box. I exchanged these 2 units for the ones with APT. Now I receive all of my channels again and they are clear. When zoomed in you are cutting part of the picture off. Don't look for an APT switch on remote since it does it automatically which is OK. When unit is on there is a blue light on the front. When turned off there is a bright red light. What is the need for a light on when off. Guess you need to point the remote at the red light when pitch-dark. But couldn't find remote in the first place if that dark. Jewels6078 I recently cancelled my cable service due to cutback on expenses and decided to use my government coupon to get ready for the switch but more importantly because I was tired of trying to watch shows which were distorted or unviewable period. After hours of research and reading reviews, I purchased my Insignia yesterday after comparing it to the Apex and the RCA. One standout feature is that it has a recall button.

This makes it easier when I want to go back to the last channel I was watching. Another plus that caught my eye when I read the other reviews was the program guide. I like that I can see at a glance what's coming on next. I was only able to receive 4 (sometimes 5) channels with my old rabbit ears but after hooking this baby up to my 2 year old Magnavox bedroom TV I am now receiving 18 channels. That may not sound like much but considering that I live in a 2 story apartment building with other tall structures 2-3 miles from me I think this is great. The picture is even more clearer and sharper than when I had cable on it! The remote, although a little small, is still comfortable for me but I wish it was lighted for nighttime use. The buttons are within easy reach on it and labeled so you don't have to guess at their function. After connecting it to my TV I clicked on 'Auto-Tune' and less than 5 minutes later I was watching crystal clear programs! I'm glad I chose the Insignia! I have another coupon which I plan to use for my other TV and will certainly get an Insignia for this one too. I also plan on buying 2 new antennas to replace the ones I have - they're about 15-20 years old. Hopefully, I will get even more channels by doing this. Bye cable, I'm not going to miss you. I didn't want to wait till the last day to get one. I checked out the ones they sale at Walmart online and wanted an RCA one, not a Magnavox one. I called all 6 stores in our town and 5 stores in the surrounding towns, they have no RCA box, only the Magnavox box. So I went to Best buy website and was glad I did. I then called and had them put one aside and then left to get it, a 30 minute drive across town. I had it hooked up in less than 5 minutes without looking at the instructions, then looked at them for getting the vcr to work correctly.

I have basic cable, but tired of paying for it each month. Been buying the series of tv movies like Cosby, Raymond, Waltons, Home Improvement. The good ole shows. Without the box, only got two fuzzy channels. We are going to cancel cable. It does have a recall button on the remote. You can also stretch the screen to fit the tv screen by using cropped.Don't wait till February 17th to get your converter box. I'd suggest going to best buy and getting this box! If you haven't got your coupons, go online and get them, they'll send you two per household. Then get your converter boxes! You'll be glad you did. I get 9 channels free. I would recommend this to a friend Helpful (2) Unhelpful (0) Report Comment ConEdisonEgg ConEdisonEgg Rating 5 out of 5 stars with 1 review More than I expected. ConEdisonEgg This converter comes with both English and Spanish manuals and has the basic set-up explained several times. When setting it up I suggest you turn your TV volume up higher than comfortable; I set it at the midpoint as the manual states but the remote for the converter was set at maximum so I cannot increase the volume now (without starting all over again). With my rabbit ears I had been receiving 8 channels but half of them were part static or unwatchable. With the converter I still got those 8 channels and they all came in CRYSTAL CLEAR. 6 of those channels also were broadcasting a second signal, some were weather, others were Standard Definition (SD) in addition the their (HD) High Definition broadcasts. This is actually the TV station's broadcasting. Those that had the SD stations filled the screen. One station's HD broadcast came in at a 16:9 ratio on my 4:3 aspect screen! Supposedly the content is better using those cables, but I'm so impressed with what I an getting I don't care. I use the AUX channel for those other components and had to locate channel 3 for this connection.

The instructions state to watch regular TV to turn the converter off and it will allow analog pass-through of the original signals. This is only partly true. You could see that the signals were getting through, but the converter was actually interfering with those signals and all 8 channels became unwatchable (luckily they all come through with the converter on). The converter has several vents on it. Prior to making this purchase I read several of the other reviews, and I suggest you do too, to make sure there is not something you expect that is not true. The vents are on the bottom, the top and the right side of the box. I cleared off a space on a nearby dresser as I feared the TV might overheat the converter (a few mentioned that the box gets hot). The remote is small compared to others I have, but the buttons are the same size. The converter can be programmed into a Universal Remote if you have one; follow the instructions for an LG or Zenith product on your remote to do so. While I programmed the remote to turn my TV on and off, I still need my TV's remote to change between channel 3 and AUX. Another person wrote that you have to point the remote directly at the converter box to get it to work. Again, this is a function of my other remotes, so I am used to doing so. Writing this review has taken me 4 times longer to write than setting up the box; which was all of 10 minutes. Not that it needed them. I could barely detect any heat coming off it after 3 hours. The bottom has large square rubber feet that raise it off the surface. This Insignia converter with passthru works great, wonderful reception, one button screen resizing, one button SAP(second audio program), one button Guide and it has Smart antenna output. No S-Video, but then it is a converter for standard TV output. While the on screen guide is limited it does allow you to cycle thru each of the channels and it shows current program and the next one.

Setup was a very easy to follow sequence that can be chosen and reset at any time. The channel lock out and V-chip like rating selection is available with password protection. The automatic channel search was very fast. It went thru about 70 channels and detected every subchannel that was within reach of my 10 year old RadioShack Omni-directinal antenna which was about 15 versus the standard analog 6 stations. It was a bit odd to see 24hr weather on the three network analog channels. I wonder if that is a transition issue. The other nice touch is it is about a paper-back book size and has a sturdy metal chassis. It includes a three foot set of audio, video and coax cables that while they appear to be very thin they do the job nicely. Great piece of engineering.
