The following paper must be avoide d to prevent possible damage to the device. Do not use pap er with staples attached. ? Do not use transparencies, labels, or photo or glo ssy paper designed for Inkjet printers or other low temperature printers. Use only media that is specified for use with HP LaserJet printers. ? Do n ot close the front door when the device is printing. 24 Chapter 2 Installatio n and configuration ENWW For supported pap er sizes, see Media specif ications on page 15. 1. Pull the tray out of the devi ce and remove any paper. 2. On the rear pape r-length guide, press th e tab and slide it so that the poin ter matches the paper size that you are loading. Make sure that the guide clicks into place. 3. Adjust the side media-width gui des outward so th at the pointer match es the paper size that you are loading. ENWW Install trays 25 Kee p the paper below the height tabs on the pape r-lengt h guide in the rear of the tray. 5. Push down on the p aper to lock the metal p aper-lift plate in pl ace. 6. Slide the tray into the device. Configure trays 1. At the device control panel, touch Supplies Status. 2. Touch Trays. 3. Select the tray th at you want to set and th en touch Modi fy Tray. 4. Change the print cartridge When a print cartridge a pproaches the end of u s eful life, a message appears on the con trol panel recommending that yo u order a replacement. The d evice can continue to print using the current prin t cartridge until a message appears instruct ing you to rep lace the cart ridge. 1. Open the front cover. 2. Remove the used pr int cartridge from the device. ENWW Install supplies 27 CAUTION Do not touch the shutter or the surface of th e roller. 5. Remove the shipping t ape from the new prin t cartridge. Disca rd the shipping ta pe according to local regulations. 28 Chapter 2 Installatio n and configuration ENWW After a short time, the cont rol panel should display Ready. 7. Installation is complete. Place the used print cartrid ge in the box in which the new cartridge a rrived. See the enclos ed recycling guide for recycling instru ctions. 8. If you are using a no n-HP print cartridge, check the device control panel for further instructions. ENWW Install supplies 29 Added memo ry also gives you more fle xibility in supporting job-storag e features, such as quick copying. Install device memory CAUTION Static electricity can damage DIMMs. When handling DIMMs, eith er wear an antistatic wrist strap or frequently touch the su rface of the DIMM antistat ic package, then touch bare metal on the device. If desired, you can replace a DIMM installed in the slo t with a higher memory DIMM. If you have not alrea dy done so, print a configuratio n pa ge to find out how much memo ry is installed in the device before adding more memory. See Use information pages on page 45. 1. After the configu ration page has p rinted, turn the device off an d disconnect the power cord. 2. Disconnect all interface cable s.

30 Chapter 2 Installatio n and configuration ENWW CAUTION To reduce the possi bility of damage caused by static electricity, always wear an electrostatic discharge (ESD) wri st strap or touch the surfa ce of the antista tic package before hand ling DIMMs. ENWW Install accessorie s 31 Make sure the locks on each side of the DIMM snap into place. NOTE To remove a DIMM, first release the locks. 32 Chapter 2 Installatio n and configuration ENWW Verify that DIMM is installed correc tly 1. Turn the device on. Check that the Ready light is illumina ted after the device has gone th rough the startup sequence. If an error me ssage appears, a DIMM m ight have been incorrec tly installed. See Control-panel messages on pa ge 201. 2. Print a configur ation page (see Use information pages on page 45 ). 3. Check the memory section on the configuratio n page and compare it to the config uration page that was printed before the memory installation. If th e amount of memory has not in creased, the DIMM might not be installe d correctly, or the DIMM might be defe ctive. Repeat the installation procedure. If necessary, install a different DIMM. Th is area should list the new device language. Enable memory for Windows 1. On the Start menu, Settings, and Printers or Printers and Faxes. 2. Select this devi ce and select Properties. 3. On the Configure tab, click More. 4. In the Total Memory field, type or select the total amount of memory that is n ow installed. 5. Click OK. 34 Chapter 2 Installatio n and configuration ENWW Install an HP Jetdirect print server card 1. Turn off the device. 2. Remove the two screws an d cover plate from the EIO slot on the back o f the device. NOTE Do not discard the screws or the cover plate. Save them for future use if you remove the EIO c ard. 3. Turn off the devi ce. 2. Disconnect the network cable fr om the EIO card. 3. Loosen the two screws from the EIO card, and th en remove the EIO card from the EIO slot. 4. Place the cover plate from the EIO slot onto th e back of the device. Insert an d tighten the two screws. 5. Turn on the device. 36 Chapter 2 Installatio n and configuration ENWW Manage supplies ? Clean the device ? Management tools ENWW Chapter content s 37 Actual cartridge yiel d depends on specific use. CAUTION The Economode feature allo ws the device to use l ess toner per page. Selecting Economode extends the life of the toner supply and reduces th e cost per page but red uces print quality. The printed image is lighter but is ade quate for printing drafts or pr oofs. Hewlett- Packard does not recomme nd full-time u se of Economode. If Economode is used full-time, the t oner supply might outlast the mecha nical parts in the pr int cartridge. If print quality be gins to degrade under these circumstances, install a new print cartridge even if the print ca rtridge still contains toner. NOTE Any damage caused by a non-HP print cartridge is not covered under the HP warranty and service agree ments. To install a new HP print cartridge, see Cha nge the print cartridge on page 27. To recycle the used cartridge, follow the instruction s included with the new cartridge. Print-cartridge authentication The device auto matically authenticates th e print cart ridge when it is inserted into the devi ce. During authentication, th e device notifies you whether a cartridge is a genuine HP print cartridg e. If the device control-panel message states that this is not a genuine HP print cartrid ge and you believe you purchased an HP prin t cartridge, see HP fraud hotline and Web site on page 39. HP will help determine if the cartridge is genuine and take step s to resolve the problem. Your print cartridge m ight not be a genuine HP print cartridge if you n otice the f ollowing. You are experiencing a high number of problems with the print cartridg e. ? The cartrid ge does not lo ok like it usua lly does (for example, the orange p ull tab is missing, or the packaging differs from HP p ackaging). ENWW Manage supp lies 39 This can cau se print-quality problems during printin g. Cleaning the device eliminates or reduces th ese problems. Clean the pape r path and print-cartridg e areas ev ery time that you change the print cartridge or whenever print-quality problems occur. As much as possibl e, keep the device from dust and debris. Clean the exterior Use a soft, damp, lint-free cloth to wipe dust, smud ge s, and stains off of the exterior of th e device. Clean the ADF If the ADF has troubl e feeding documents, clean the ADF pickup roller assembly. 1. Turn off the devi ce and unp lug the power cord. 2. Open the ADF cover. 3. Press the round blue button while liftin g the green lever. Rotate the green lever until it stops in the open position.

The p ickup roller assembly sho uld remain on the surface. 40 Chapter 3 Mainte nance ENWW ENWW Clean the device 41 Clean the scanner lid backing Minor debris can accumulate on the white docu ment lid backing that is located underneath the scanner lid. 1. Open the scanne r lid. 2. Clean the wh ite document lid backing by u sing a soft cloth or sponge that has been moiste ned with a mild soap and warm water. 3. Wash the backing ge ntly to loosen de bris; do not scrub th e backing. 4. Dry the backing by usin g a chamois or soft cl oth. CAUTION Do not use paper-based wipes be cause they might scratch the backin g. 5. If this does not clean the backing well enough, re peat the previous ste ps and use isopropyl alcoho l to dampen the cl oth or sponge, and then wipe the ba cking thoroughly wi th a damp cloth to remove any residual alcohol. 42 Chapter 3 Mainte nance ENWW NOTE If streaks or other defects appear only on copies produced usin g the automatic document feeder (ADF), clean the scan ner strip (step 3). It is not nec essary t o clean the scanner glass. 1. Open the sca nner lid. 2. Clean the glass b y using a damp, lint-free cloth. CAUTION Do not use abrasives, a cetone, benzen e, ammonia, ethyl alcohol, or carbon tetrachloride on any part of th e device; th ese can damage the device. Do not place liquids directly on the glass. They might seep under it and damage the device. 3. Clean the scanne r strip by using a damp, lin t-free cloth. ENWW Clean the device 43 Accumulation of toner and pa rticles can cause specks to appear on the front or back side of your print jobs. To ensure opti mum print quality, HP re commends th at you use the cleaning page every time that you replace the print cartridge. The cleaning pro cedure takes about 2.5 minu tes to complete. A CLEANING message ap pears on the device control panel display while the cleaning is taking place.

In order for the cleaning page to work corre ctly, print the page o n copier-grade p aper (not bond, h eavy, or rough paper). The device prints a cleanin g page. 5. Follow the instructions printed on the cleaning p age. Clean spilled toner If you spill toner on your clothes, wash them in cold water.
