How to Adjust the Carb on a Ryobi 766R Trimmer How to Tune-Up a Lawnmower Engine Poulan Pro Chain Saw Troubleshooting How to Troubleshoot a Coleman Powermate Two-cycle engines, the kind requiring the owner to mix the gasoline with oil, are used on chainsaws and other yard equipment because they provide high power at a low weight. But they are notorious for hard starting. If your Homelite two-cycle chain saw engine won’t start, the problem most likely will be found in the fuel or ignition systems. Fuel System The most common problem associated with nonstarting two-cycle chain saw engines is old, stale fuel. The gasolines available in 2014 are complex blends that can go stale in as few as 60 to 90 days.

If you run stale fuel in your Homelite two-cycle chainsaw, you risk engine flooding from a gummed-up fuel system that can’t correctly measure out the fuel. Check for flooding by removing the spark plug and examining its tip. If the plug’s tip is wet with fuel, you have a flooding problem. Clearing Flooding Address flooding by draining out the fuel in your engine’s tank. Remove the air cleaner, tip over the engine and allow any gas within the carburetor to drain out. Squirt one shot of carburetor cleaner into the carb’s throat and reinstall the air cleaner. With the spark plug out of the engine, tip the chain saw so the spark plug hole points to the ground, move the choke lever to the “Run” position and pull the starter rope about 12 times to clear excess fuel from the cylinder. Collect the old fuel for recycling. Check for Spark Check for spark with the spark plug out of the engine. Reattach the plug wire to the plug, hold the plug by the rubber boot and touch the tip to bare metal on the engine block. Pull the starter cord and look for a spark to jump the gap in the spark plug tip. If there’s no spark, try again with a new spark plug. If you get no spark in either test, the engine’s ignition system probably needs servicing. Reassemble Engine After clearing flooding and verifying that you have spark, reinstall the spark plug in the engine. Mix a fresh batch of two-cycle fuel and pour it into the gas tank. Push the primer bulb at the side of the carburetor until it is full of fuel. If the engine doesn’t start within a few pulls, it may need attention from a repair shop.
