In under three months, the first print run of 3000 had sold out. In 1995, Haynes’ work was recognised with an OBE for services to publishing. That would be an AC Cobra 289 which he described as, “the ultimate modern vintage sports car.”. Don’t be left out—join the ranks of those who Drive Tastefully. So many of us started out on cars with a soon-to-be-grubby workshop manual from Haynes spread out in front of a fistful of wrenches and baffling car parts. Now the man who started it all, John Haynes, founder of the Haynes Publishing Group and the Haynes International Motor Museum has passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, aged 80. He was famously kind and generous, and he leaves behind a remarkable publishing legacy that started with his first ever book, “Building a 750 Special”. John loved nothing more than riding around the plantation with his father in their Morris 8 saloon. He later moved to the UK to attend boarding school, where he persuaded his house master to allow him to miss rugby and instead work on converting an Austin 7 into a lightweight special. Once finished, he advertised the car for sale, received over 150 replies to the advert, and made a profit, prompting him to produce a booklet showing other enthusiasts how he’d built the car. The first print run of 250 copies sold out in ten days. Then, in 1965, John was posted to Aden, where an RAF colleague bought an Austin-Healey Sprite, and asked John to help him rebuild it. John agreed, and quickly realised that the official factory manual was not designed to help the average car owner. He bought a camera and photographed the process of dismantling and rebuilding the engine; the first Haynes Manual, for the Austin-Healey Sprite, was published in 1966.</p><p> Its first print run of 3000 sold out in less than three months, and since then over 200 million Haynes Manuals have been sold around the world. He became also became a prolific car collector, and in 1985 he founded the Haynes International Motor Museum in Sparkford, Somerset as an Educational Charitable Trust. It now displays more than 400 vehicles, and is enjoyed by over 125,000 people a year. Although he stepped down as Chairman of the Haynes Publishing Group in 2010 he continued to play an active role as Founder Director, and he could be found almost every day of the week taking lunch in the museum’s Cafe 750, chatting with visitors. Wade 5.0 out of 5 stars But most of the things shown require having substantial skill in working with sheet steel and welding go sheet steel. I guess it would be possible to teach yourself those skills but it would probably mean a lot of scrap being produced before you ended up with useable parts. The book makes it clear what skills are needed, what tools are required and the processes to create needed body parts for car restoration. Getting those skills is going to require more than the book though. As far as diy bodywork books go this is the best on the topic so far. I can actually afford all the tools used in this book and that is one major reason why it gets 5 stars. While the examples and pictures are mainly UK classic sports cars (or what start out as rust buckets), the techniques apply equally well to modern Australian and North American cars. This guy can turn a completely rusted out car into a new one. For the re-spray, Sahli relied on the experience and products of Wuppertal refinish brand Standox. With its four employees, the Rene Sahli bodyshop has an outstanding reputation among classic car owners in the local area. Its expertise in restoration becomes apparent as soon as you look at the bodyshop’s website. The image gallery is full with exclusive classic cars that have been given a new lease of life, and they include quite a number of special Porsches. Rust is not unusual for vehicles of that age, as cavity sealing or galvanising were still largely unknown then. But when Sahli examined the classic a little more closely, he quickly discovered more rust. Spot repair on a sports convertible that was almost half a century old was simply not going to do the trick,” he says. A perfect job for the classic car specialists at Rene Sahli. To carry out the restoration, he removed the bumpers, fenders, and front and rear hoods and sent them to a specialist company in Stuttgart, Germany. They were then primed using a cathodic process. However, the complex procedure revealed that some of the add-on parts including the front hood were just not salvageable. They had to be replaced using original Porsche parts.” There can be visible differences even if the name of the colour is the same, and some colours changed in the course of production,” he says. They provided greater coverage but that meant more colour deviations compared to modern paint. Pigmentation also plays a role in metamerism. This can lead to another perception of colour under varying light sources. That is why it is important to ensure that the repainted and the original colours behave in a similar way. For these reasons, I used the modern spectrophotometer because, together with the Standowin iQ software and the good colour database, they simply deliver the best results.</p><p>” To recreate the right colour, he sought additional support from the technicians at Standox distributor for Switzerland, Andre Koch AG in Urdorf near Zurich. Even for unusual requests such as these, Standox is able to count on its extensive coloristic knowledge that it has built up over many years of close collaboration with the majority of car manufacturers. After the restoration, the bodywork of the Porsche has reclaimed its original splendour. What is so great about classic cars is also that their technology is relatively straightforward compared to today’s models.” But we had to hurry so that he could still enjoy his Targa in the summer,” he says.
