The only thing I'd improve is the spoon retention in the handle. I'll be cooking in this thing while I'm away at work- how cool is that?We use it Year round, but in the colder months, it really gets put through its paces. My wife is little, so she finds it a bit of a pain to wash do to it’s weight. Maybe she just says that so she doesn’t have to clean it. We’ve gotten our money’s worth 10x.She rarely used it over the years, and after 3rd or 4th use, it just stopped working after 10 minutes of being turned on. This serves me well, but I wanted to cook bigger things. I did a lot of research before settling on this model. I was originally looking at All-Clad one with a metal insert that you could supposedly use to brown meat on the stove and then put the insert directly into the cooker. This sounded like a great idea, but the reviews for that model were horrible so I passed. I was looking at All-Clad and Cuisinart slow cookers with ceramic inserts, but I quickly realized that they didn't have any more features than this one, and this was a fraction of the cost. I leave my house at 7:30am and I don't get home until almost 9pm. Some of the recipes I use only need to cook for 8 hours on low, so it would be great if this had a delay start feature (it doesn't). But I don't believe any of the programmable slow cookers have this feature (even the high end ones)--I'm guessing its a food safety issue. It would also have been great if I could program multiple steps. For instance, some recipes call for cooking on low for 6 hours, and then cooking on high for an additional 2 hours. Again, not possible with this slow cooker, but I haven't seen this feature on any of the high-end ones either. One thing about this slow cooker compared to my older more basic Rival Crockpot is that the glass lid has a rubber gasket around it. This creates a tighter seal, which is great when you lock down the lid to transport (which I don't do), but it also means that the liquid doesn't evaporate during cooking. This could be good or bad depending on the type of food you are cooking. When I make roasts or stews I find that there is too much liquid at the end for my liking, so I either adjust the amount of liquid that goes in the next time I making it, or I cook it on high for a half hour with the lid off.</p><p> But considering that I have to leave my food in the cooker for much longer than the recipe calls for, I would rather have too much liquid than not enough. I can't really speak to longevity, particularly in comparison to the more expensive models. I have had it for about 4 years, but I have only used it sporadically. I recently started to use it two to three times a week, and I will update my review after I have been using it at this frequency for a while.It cooks evenly and does not overheat. Shelley Ireland 5.0 out of 5 stars We called HB's toll free number and the customer service was pleasant, understanding and most of all did exactly what she said she was going to do. Within 2 days we had a replacement that is working excellant.I just decided last month that it is time to learn. As I check Pinterest for some ideas, I found an easy way to cook. This is done by having a one month menu. I bought all my ingredients, separated them for a day. Cut all my vegies, meat and whatever I need. Freeze them. I was debating to whether get this or another brand. It was cheaper and has good reviews as well. But what caught my attention was the simplicity of the use. The size is actually nice but would buy a smaller version for travel. I love the locking lid. It secures it and wont have to worry about forgetting to close properly. It has a rubber gasket and steam vent which is super nice. I dont like super complicated cooker and this is perfect because it is simple to use. I will update more once I get more usage. But so far, ive been using it for 3 weeks, it is perfect. I have already cooked lots of food and my husband is very happyOne can cook in hot or cold weather without the strain of summer heat or extreme cold weather. One can cook large amounts and freeze for late ruse so that one doe snot need to be cooking every week. Also the probe makes it possible to cook a roast to a perfect temperature. Very clear instruction manuel as wellIt's supposed to let you pick one of three modes, but the SELECT menu keeps flashing and ignores all my button presses. So. unusable.Has nice features.</p><p>Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this one - it has many shortcomings: - the cord is extremely short. I wish I had kept the box so I could return this unit.That much light combined with the light blue LED display is a recipe (no pun intended) for frustration. We were able to rotate the device enough to eventually see the settings on the display, but anyone that would be trying to use this slow cooker in an area with a lot of light may find that they too are very frustrated at the choice of colors that were used for the LED display. Other than that issue we like most everything else with this cooker. The stoneware is a little heavy but that is very much to be expected. On the plus side it can go directly into the dishwasher and we don't have any concern that it will be damaged by doing so (which was not the case with the last slowcooker we had as it had a metal pan with a non-stick surface that was too easily scratched and not as dishwasher friendly as it could have been). We'll get past the annoyance that dropped our own rating for this device, though using brighter LEDs would be something that we'd highly recommend back to the manufacturer.So far we have used it a handful of times, each time netting us GREAT results. We have cooked using all the settings, including the probe setting. That in particular was eye opening, for we learned that a Boston Butt cooked on HIGH will be cooked to temperature in less than 2 hours. So this slow cooker gets hot. Calibrate your recipes when you first get your slow cooker so as to determine how long each will take. This goes for any slow cooker you end up with, not just this one. I was worried that the slow cooker would be too big for our family (2 adults, 2 small children). I needn't have worried. It's the perfect capacity for a dinner plus one night's leftovers. Why did I pick this model instead of the other Hamilton-Beach with a lot more reviews.</p><p> Because I saw the higher model number on this one and hoped that it meant that this model is the newest one. So far I've had none of the problems people have described in the reviews for the other product, so I'd say it was a good gamble. I will update this review if the situation changes.The probe function worked great. The manual timer worked as expected. After cooking, unit places itself into a warm and hold mode. Simple loved the unit. Purchased separate carry case to accommodate the unit. Expected to have and use the unit for a very long time. Mind you I use the unit about once every 6 - 8 weeks. So not extremely often. I go to use item this past weekend and unit turns on, I program it. Go to check on my dinner several hours later and realize something is terribly wrong. Glass lid is not full of condensation. Touch unit and it is cold. Figure I must have done something wrong in programming unit. I mean it is supper simple, but it had to be me. Unit is only a year old and has been used a half a dozen times. So I program unit and come back in one hour. Same issue, unit not heating up. Transfer my stew and am forced to cook it over the range. Next day I place water into the crock pot, pull out the instruction manual in case I am doing something wrong. I still cannot believe it can be the unit. Following instructions, I set the unit. Hour later, no heat. Call Hamilton Beach technical support. They understand the issue immediately. State it cannot be fixed. Unit needs to be replaced. No, the units have not changed. This is not considered a problem needing fixing. Have not decided what I'm going to do. Be aware this unit does have a certain percentage of product failure the manufacture has decided to accept as acceptable.The heating element quit working about 3 months ago. I intended to call the company, but haven't had a chance yet. I bought this when my old 4 quart crock pot formed a hairline crack across the bottom from long-time use.</p>
