As the name implies, the iTrip Auto can be used only in your car. Last year's more useable model can be found for half the price. We delete comments that violate our policy, which we encourage you to read.

Discussion threads can be closed at any time at our discretion. Unfortunately, because FM broadcasting technology is tightly controlled by the Federal Communications Commission, the FM transmission performance of this year's crop of iPod FM transmitters is largely unchanged from the previous year. Unlike the Belkin Tunebase or the DLO TransPod, the perceived benefit of the iTrip Auto is that it doesn't try to provide a sturdy (and usually bulky) docking station for your iPod. Instead, the iTrip's cable allows you to place your iPod wherever is most convenient--whether that's on the passenger seat, in a cup holder, or shoved in a change tray. If you're the type of person who hates messy cables, the iTrip Auto is not the right choice for you.Gone is the legible monochrome display found on last year's iTrip Auto. In its place is a squinty, blue readout that is hopelessly obscured behind a mirrored plastic shell. The result is a product that is nearly impossible to read in the daylight hours. After the sun goes down, the display's illuminated blue letters eventually reveal themselves, leaving the iTrip Auto's indistinguishable black buttons as the only dumbfounding design flaw. The SmartScan feature allows the iTrip Auto to quickly scan all the locally available FM radio stations to find what it considers the three best options for broadcasting. During our unscientific testing around San Francisco and Oakland, we found that the iTrip Auto's SmartScan feature consistently produced at least one clear broadcasting frequency, proving itself a useful alternative to hunting and pecking manually through stations. Although there are no sound enhancement features to speak of, the iTrip Auto does enable you to switch between stereo and mono modes. The reflective mirrored display is a total deal breaker, especially considering that you can pick up last year's model (minus the SmartScan) for about half the price. Maximus 4.0 out of 5 stars So I called Grifin and they told me that in order to charge my ipod nano 4th Gen that it needs to be an itrip with Smart Scan technology. So i returned it and bought this one, and i'm very happy with it. 1. This unit charges our ipod nano 4th Gen no problem. The ring of light on the cigarette lighter plug lights up red when initially connected denoting power to FM transmitter, then amber once the ipod is connected (charging), and then it turns green when the ipod is fully charged. 2. I have a sealed radio in my car so therefore don't have an audio input unfortunatley (2005 Volvo s40 2.4i) and so FM Transmitters are a way of life for me.

Your not going to get the perfect sound quality from these like you would with a direct input, so check to see if you got an aux input in your car first and then just buy a charger and a double male head phone wire. I have a Sirius Radio has an FM Transmitter so i'm use to dealing with changing frequencys every so often. I live in NJ and am in NYC and Long Island a lot. My car can tune to 87.9 which I use for the sirius radio almost everywhere, but sometimes while in NY I use 93.3 (pretty high on the frequency list, but for some reason it's clear). 3. Check to make sure your car can go into 87.9 range first, these channels are hardly ever used by radio stations, then switch this grifin itrip autoscan to international frequencies just press function, then press AND HOLD mode for roughly ten secons until a new menu appears. It'll give you US, EU, and JP choices above each of the three buttons on the itrip. I picked JP (for japan) which enables all the normal US frequencies plus the lower range, lower then my car can go, my car only goes to 87.3 or something. A funny thing is that when i tune my car and itrip to 87.9 i get static, but if i keep the itrip at 87.9 and tune my car to 87.8 it comes in perfectly clear. One downfall which people do mention is that it is a tad bit hard to read the display of the itrip when you got a glare, but you can set your own presets on the itrip. Autoscan function is stupid, but apparently this is the model that'll charge the ipod nano 4th gen.It works, but it doesn't seem to put out a strong enough signal. I'll use smart scan and hop to the station.I've done it manually as well, and it's clear then gets bad static a few minutes later. I've unplugged to hear the actual station and it's all fuzz, no actual station is there. It does seem to help if I hang it from my volume knob but I don't have a good place to elevate it all the time, usually just in my center console between seats. I'm actually a bit bummed out with this.

It's good sometimes but being in the middle of a great song and then losing it to static is pretty frustrating when you're cruising on the highway and can't really focus on the transmitter to try and adjust easily. I probably would not recommend to a friend. Would be nice is there was some way to tweak the transmission power, seems like that would help to keep a better signal going.Almost has to be a defective unit though I see similar customer reviews--------so maybe the defective rate is really high?? If you try this do not buy it from Shop Cell. I received permission to return this item but I have to pay the postage---------I'm too used to Amazon's return service but I guess Amazon is into dumping on their customers now too---------so I will probably do more buying from others than Amazon in the future. Bottom line-------check the return policy of these Marketplace vendors because Amazon is not forcing them to meet the same standards Amazon used to have. August 6, 2013 Update The Seller contacted me and maintains that they sent me a return label (email) that was postage paid. I have never had to pay before to return through Amazon so was surprised that I had to pay this time. I no longer have any of the paper work so cannot verify.I have my doubts it was New off the shelf. Why do I believe this. Because the tape on the package seemed discolored on one side like it was opened once before and taped back shut. After pulling it out of the box the plastic looked like it was cut along the edge to remove the product from the plastic. I was expecting to get a work out taking it out of the plastic, but instead it had this ragged looking edge that appeared that someone had tried to carefully cut the plastic so a person wouldn't notice. Like I have said before, a person usually has to FIGHT his product out of the plastic, not just lift the plastic apart. Well I told myself that I would just keep it anyways.

I tried it out only to be discouraged by the poor sound coming out of my speakers. I reread the directions, and tried many different things, only to slightly change the quality of sound. Very discouraged with pretty much the entire experience. sigh. I guess this is just how bad they sound. I actually have a CD changer that uses FM reception and it sounds really good. To bad this doesn't.Recently, I brought an iPhone 4 which would not fit the tunebase in its case and I gave my Touch to my wife and with it the tunebase. I wanted an fm transmitter which connected by cable not mount and which charged the phone. This seemed to fit the bill and didn't cost the earth. Overall I am very happy with it, it does exactly what I wanted and the sound is okay. The cable is long enough that you can put your device in a suitable place. One slight oddity is that with the iPhone 4 you get a message pop up every time you use it saying that this device is not optimised for the iPhone 4, I have yet to notice any issues with it however and the sound is better than the tunebase which doesn't display that message. Listening to audiobooks means I have the volume higher than normal and there is a little noise in the background which isn't noticeable when listening to music, this is easily sorted by switching the iTrip to mono. Only the popup message on the phone drops this to 4 stars otherwise I would easily give it 5 stars. That it's really clever at finding a quiet frequency. Well, it's about as smart as my goldfish, which is better than, for example, a woodlouse, but I expected at least the intelligence of a guinea pig. It finds 3 reasonably quiet frequencies, but if these are at the bottom of the band, it doesn't appear to keep looking across the rest of the band. As a result, I often re-tune mine manually to around 107MHz, which works well where I live.

You will probably need to re-tune it as you move about (driving, that is, rather than adjusting the seat), especially in the south east where there's more FM radio stations than you'd care to know. Probably works well at the north pole, but I'm not sure how well the Apple franchise is marketed there. Or if there are any cars. Works well with my ipod, iphone 3GS and iphone 4 and I've not had any of the technical problems the other reviewers have reported. Recommended, but don't expect the same sound quality as a wired connection.Tried to scan manually to no avail so its back to CDs for me then, ?27 worse off! EDIT.OK I changed my rating from 2 to 3. Having taken some advice I did a soft re-set of my Ipod Nano 4th Gen (which I am assured IS compatible with this item). Trouble is the signal got worse once I started driving. However after much fiddling (in a traffic jam) I finally found a station that works pretty well. Maybe its the car stereo or the ipod or the device but if you are having any problems I would try the soft reset it may well work for you.The FM scam works quickly, locks onto a station and is very simple to use. You set your car radio to recieve transmission and set off on your journey. 50m down the road it needs re-tuning, then again, and again - in fact you are more likely to have an accident whilst trying to find a free radio frequency than you are to get a clear steady reception. I have used this in Kent, London and the west country as well as on the motorways inbetween and have not had a clear solid reception anywhere - occassionaly you get a few minutes music before it is merged with voices from a nearby transmitter. I had great expectations for this item but it definitely does not live up to any of them! Here's where I find this transmitter to be excellent: 1) Autoscan: Takes 15 seconds to find 3 optimal, noise-free stations, and sets them as preset. 2) Stays on even when no sound is being played.

Some transmitters switch off if they don't detect sound for 5-10 seconds, bt this stays on which is useful for iPhones, as you can go from music to phone call, back to music without being annoyed! 3) Audio quality is very good, with low noise-levels. 4) Design is good, meaning the cables and such don't get in your way; my previous transmitter would get stuck in the gear lever quite often due to the cables coming out from the bottom of the unit. Now for the problem I faced. I noticed that playing very large range music (deep bass, vocals, high trebles, all at the same time), so for example breakbeats, or trance even, are handles very poorly by this device. It sounds like it can't handle all the sounds simultaneously, and therefore it alternates in dropping out sounds. This is annoying, because listening to a fast beat, you'll constantly hear a basskick, snare hit, cymbal, or even vocal, dropping out, and it gives you a headache. But, if you listen to hip-hop, pop, and possibly most rock, you should enjoy this device a lot.
