In his first few weeks, he became intrigued with machining, and decided he would learn as much as he could. He went to trade school to learn blueprint reading and conventional machining, and showed his boss the parts he was milling and turning in school. His boss tried out Jesse’s capabilities, and with experience, Jesse came to love machining and making parts. He went to school and learned manual G- and Mcode programming, becoming night foreman within a year. Tired of night work, he moved on to another shop where, after a few years, found himself managing the shop, quoting jobs, programming, setting up and machining. Outgrowing two spaces within two years, he built a 3,100 ft2 shop which now houses 12 employees, running 14 CNCs and assorted support equipment. He later added a 600 ft2 building for metrology and administrative office space. The shop had no idea we would be at war in March, and it was far into the war that Jesse discovered they had been making parts for AIM-9X Sidewinder missiles. Relying on defense, the shop grew to 24 employees and maintained three shifts, six days a week, through 2009.

It was only for the infrequent surface machining project that he outsourced programming. In late 2012, he accepted three orders that required surface machining. After a month, one of the contract programmers told him that he couldn’t program the part. With nearly all lead time gone, the shop had no way to program the part. Vowing that he would never get into such a squeeze again, he acquired a seat of GibbsCAM in January, 2013. It was really made for machinists.” At the beginning, it was overwhelming, but by the time I had finished those parts, I felt like I had become an expert at solids machining and 3D contouring.” Cut Part Rendering (CPR), GibbsCAM’s toolpath simulation is one such feature. Jesse uses it to check for gouging, which displays in red; for surface finish, which he inspects by zooming into the rendered part; and because most of the shop’s parts are complex, Jesse often runs CPR with “collision check” turned on. When I reorient the part to machine another side, GibbsCAM knows exactly where material is left. This enables everything to blend when I index on the 4th axis and machine in three.” When he makes 4-axis parts, he loads his custom made fixturing as tooling, because GibbsCAM will stay away from tooling by whatever distance he specifies. Special routines, or speeds and feeds in specific materials, or certain types of part features, are good candidates. “I don’t need to recreate a process when I run into one that’s similar,” says Jesse. “I just call it up and use it, or just modify a variable. For some jobs, it can easily save me five hours of programming.” The software also lets him save any machining pass as his new “stock,” which allows him to rotate the part (or move it to another machine) to machine from another side, and get smooth blends.

In an effort to diversify and flatten the business cycles, Jesse aims to start offering machining services to the medical industry, although he sees this as a huge challenge for lack of contacts in the industry. He also anticipates getting a 5-axis machining center and a larger multi-tasking machine, but because the shop is full, he needs to determine which of his other machines will need to be sacrificed to accommodate them. In the meantime, Jesse is personally training two of his machinists on GibbsCAM software, hoping to alleviate his own work load. All rights reserved. Screen Saver Construction Set v2 0 9 keygen by. When Rob Pleas (pronounced “place”) took the initiative to expand his fabrication business into new areas, he soon realized that manual machines would not be able to keep up with increasing production demands. His new product lines also required extensive programming and testing before production could begin. A more efficient, easy to use and costeffective method was needed. Pleas originally founded The Welding Place, a 1,600 sq. ft. facility in Puyallup, WA, to make custom ornamental railings, gates and fences. When the economy went into recession in 2008, Pleas’ shop survived by providing repair and fabrication services, and also by producing new products, such as a cargo carrier for the Polaris RZR ATV. During this time Pleas also took the opportunity to develop his photography business, a venture that required tripod attachments. The cost of available products was prohibitive and, Pleas joked, he had to adhere to his wife’s restrictive “If you can build it, you can’t buy it.” Pleas had learned manual machining by watching educational videos, and used his manual lathe and mill to prototype a tripod head. “The market offered high-end professional heads that weighed 3 lbs.My tripod head weighs 1.5 lbs., uses solid aluminum for two L-brackets, instead of tubing with good bearings and nice features.” When he had a working prototype, he approached a Seattle photographic store, which suggested changes that Pleas incorporated. The store liked the result, took a few tripod heads on consignment, and soon began carrying them.

Later, at an exposition where photographic vendors, buyers and users congregated to view new products, the Seattle store introduced a customer who needed a way to quickly flip his camera between horizontal and vertical positions. Pleas agreed to build an attachment, launching a sec- ond product, a folding 5” L-bracket with locking pin, which he has since built in a larger version to accommodate larger cameras. Pleas quickly realized that working with manual machines was not productive. It took nine hours to machine parts for a complete prototype head, and revisions took nearly as long. For production, he would need a CNC, and with no desire to learn and use G-code programming, he would need CAM software. In 2012, Pleas sold his manual machines to acquire a used, 1997 Lagun 717-S CNC mill in disrepair. During restoration, Pleas developed a good relationship with Lagun’s service department, which he deemed “fantastic.” The machine has a 58” x 11” table, XYZ travels of 32”, 17” and 7”, 16” knee and 40 taper 55-4,250 RPM spindle. Despite the large amount of restoration work required, the machine acquisition was a sound investment. Pleas then purchased an entry-level CAM system. Although it was almost adequate for programming simple welding supports, it proved to be too problematic, taking hours to program simple parts and yielding programs that nearly always required debugging. When one problem was fixed, another would appear. A program might simulate properly, and then fail at the machine. He could count on losing two to four pieces on a 10-piece run. “I would spend hours, and sometimes days, programming, testing and troubleshooting,” Pleas explained. “I lost all confidence in programming and had no confidence in that software. Compounding problems, the CAM and CAD companies blamed each other.

” GibbsCAM Cut Part Rendering displays the toolpath and surface finish Rob Pleas will get at the machine after post-processing the toolpath with the GibbsCAM post, developed precisely to take advantage of the control’s capabilities. Cut Part Rendering, which can use different colors for tools or operations, here displays two tripod brackets as tool chamfers edges. His first three products, left to right: folding L-bracket; gimbal tripod head to support a camera and long lens for smooth panning; and quick-release balancing clamp for mounting camera or lens on some tripod heads. The general purpose CAD system worked well for ornamental weldments and supporting hardware, but it took too much time to make even minor changes, which prototyping frequently requires. A. His representative said that what he sees on the screen is what he will get on the part, both toolpath and finish. “I did not believe it,” said Pleas, “so I tried to make it fail, using various ways to fool the system, but it never failed. Now I rely on it.” Post-processing proved to be as exacting as toolpath simulation. Programs ran exactly as simulated. “Most surprising of all,. Text with this appearance indicates text that appears in GibbsCAM or on your monitor. Typically this is a button or text for a dialog. Term: A paragraph formatted like this one usually indicates a word or phrase used in GibbsCAM, followed by a definition or explanation.

Hotspot popup A paragraph formatted like this one has no special meaning in PDF. In online help, however, you can click the hotspot to pop up a small block of text that provides additional details or links. Drop-down formatting: A paragraph formatted like this one has no special meaning in PDF. In online help, however, you can click the drop-down heading to reveal or hide the explanatory text it contains. Graphics Some graphics are altered so as to de-emphasize irrelevant information. A “torn” edge signifies an intentional omission. Portions of a graphic might be blurred or dimmed to highlight the item being discussed. For example: Annotations on a graphic are usually numbered callouts (as seen above), and sometimes include green circles, arrows, or tie-lines to focus attention on a particular portion of the graphic. Faint green borders that outline areas within a graphic usually signify an image map. System and Installation Changes Items discussed below are independent of any particular GibbsCAM package or function. Update Notifier When GibbsCAM 2011 first starts, it checks for updated releases (if an Internet connection is available). Installation New Installation Media To accommodate separate 32-bit and 64-bit installations for each language, GibbsCAM software is now delivered on multiple dual-layer DVDs. The same installer is used to install from physical 11 General Functionality media or from the website. New Installation Capabilities The GibbsCAM installation process now automatically detects the default national language and whether the platform is 32-bit or 64-bit. For details, refer to the Installation guide. Migrating Settings and Preferences The GibbsCAM Migration Tool lets you detect all previously installed versions of GibbsCAM and copy compatible settings and preferences — display settings, custom MDDs and VMMs, bolt and tap table data, macro configuration file, machine models, and so forth — from a specified previous version to the current release.

The previous version is not modified. For best results, run the Migration Tool before the first time you start a newly installed release of GibbsCAM. This allows old files to be migrated before they are blocked by new files created in the newly installed version. Appropriate restrictions are respected if Administrator privileges are lacking. Note: There is no ability to migrate plug-ins or material databases from previous releases. However, settings for Plug-In Manager can be migrated. 64-Bit Integration GibbsCAM 2011 is fully compatible with both 64-bit and 32-bit Windows. The ability of 64-bit systems to handle more RAM and use larger chunks of information gives them a performance 13 General Functionality advantage if your part files are mid-size or larger or if you run many tasks simultaneously. The GibbsCAM installer detects which platform you have and installs the corresponding version of the software. GibbsCAM macros and Reporter functions are fully compatible with Microsoft Excel in both 32bit and 64-bit modes. All plug-ins distributed with the product are 64-bit compatible. However, we cannot guarantee third-party plug-ins. If you have a 32-bit-only plug-in, please contact your third-party plug-in vendor. Please note that 32-bit VMMs cannot be used on 64-bit GibbsCAM. Customers on Maintenance can upgrade their 32-bit VMMs to 64-bit at no charge. Interface Changes Items discussed below are common to all GibbsCAM product options. Menus, Behaviors, and Look-and-Feel New main menu Features replaces Wizards. New menu items under Features include Attribute Manager and Feature Manager (see “Attributes and User-Defined Features” on page 18). Important: Deactivating a plug-in disables that plug-in's function throughout GibbsCAM. Plug-In Manager also gives you control over menu items and sub-items displayed in the Plug-Ins menu. You can right-click to add and rename folders and subfolders, and you can move items or entire groups using drag-and-drop.
