It acquires satellites quickly, even in less than optimal circumstances with trees overhead or tall buildings nearby. It is easy to program and the onscreen menus are convenient. It is thin and reasonably light and portable and the screen is big. But it has one major problem: the cigarette-lighter charging system does not supply enough current to charge the GPS while it is turned on. It is unbelievable that Garmin would allow their unit to be sold under these conditions. When I received the unit I completely charged the battery (by connecting it to my computer using a USB cable which Garmin does not supply, but I happened to have one anyway). Then I used it in my car, always plugged into the cigarette lighter. It turns on automatically whenever you start the car, and it turns off automatically when the ignition switch is turned off. However, over this two week period the battery slowly discharged (without my knowledge) until it reached a point where the unit would no longer turn on, even when plugged in to the car charger.

Assuming the unit was defective, I called Garmin and (after 20 minutes on hold) learned that the car charger is not up to the task, and that the GPS will slowly lose its charge when it is turned on, even if you have it connected to the cigarette lighter adapter. I believe this means that if you have a long drive, perhaps 8 hours or more, then the unit may not even remain operational throughout the full trip. Other people have made similar complaints about some of the other Garmin GPS units. Then the unit will turn on, but the battery will need recharging. I was told to do this by connecting it to my computer using a USB cable, which Garmin does not supply with the GPS (fortunately I already had one), but I assume you could do the same by connecting it to the car charger and making certain that the unit is turned off while it is charging. What a shame that Garmin has produced a superior product with a fatal behavior. I will keep mine for now, but I'm going to investigate other charging solutions. Perhaps after reading this review, the wizards at Garmin will redesign the charging system for this GPS. Since I had my unit attached to the windshield, and since I only drive during midday, it is always in sunlight. This charging rule applies to many other models as well; for any given model you can download the manual from Garmin, turn to the Troubleshooting section, and see whether or not they describe a similar charging rule. (The rule is probably meant to avoid overheating the battery: lithium batteries can occasionally catch fire if they are severely overcharged or overheated.) I think this explains why some people have encountered charging problems and others have not: it depends on whether or not the unit is always in direct sunlight while you are driving. Some people use the friction mount and their Garmin sits on the console. Others drive later in the day or at night.Started out with the wonderful smaller version when these first came out years ago.

Through no fault of Garmin, when you spill enough on a computerized piece of equipment it will eventually die. That brought me to this model since the little one was discontinued. I'm on the road all day in a van doing service calls so I need something compact which this, compared to the original is not. Oddly, that same size now is a handheld and three times the cost of the smaller one they discontinued. This one died for no reason after a few years, did not last as long as the first smaller model. Now I go on a store hunt for another one since I need it quickly and find that you have to buy one with things that people like myself don't need nor want. Looked here and found this discontinued model that just died. I have always been pleased with Garmin over TomTom even though this is too big and takes up a lot of room since I don't mount it to the dash for many good reasons. Sometimes it is inaccurate and cannot find new neighborhoods but I an guessing that can happen to any of them as fast as new areas are popped up. I wish I knew this did NOT included the USB charger since I have over 190 addresses to input. Took me on a mad chase in the city and it cannot be found anyplace so instead of downloading new maps and putting in addresses I had to order a USB cable here this morning not arriving until Monday so I have no idea how I am going to input all those by Tuesday. My biggest complaint with Garmin is their website. I tried to download, before I realized that I needed the USB cable the maps. Their website is a debacle, looks great, has lots of hoopla but not one browser would work. Apparently now you have to download something called Garmin express whatever that is before you can download a map. Okay, but whether Explorer, Chrome, Firefox it kept saying this browser is no longer supported. Now, not brilliant with this type of stuff, I find that hard to believe since every other website I can download anything.

I then try to contact customer support which seems to be somewhat of an oxymoron to no avail for over an hour on all three browsers. Hey Garmin, most of your page does not load. Forbidden server error, page not found errors, waited until this morning finally got customer service number but naturally they are closed on weekends. The good news is all the hoopla on the website works and looks nice. The only way I could get the pages to load and not go around in circles was to use my cell phone so clearly they don't care about people who still run a business on a laptop. We now have to deal with the garmin express still, went back to the desktop and what I did not run into yesterday was allow permission where they give you directions as to how to add them to your trusted sites. Do that, but noooo, it will still pop up with you have to add us to your trusted sites to download garmin express. No matter what I did, the same error pops up. When this USB arrives on Monday, I still doubt I will be able to do a map update or use this thing since in two days I have wasted 2.5 hours of my life NOT being able to get their website to talk to my desktop. No high hopes here. The good news, the only good news is that when you can actually use the sucker, it works great for the most part, does not always let you know in time for a turn but other brands have the same issue. I can see where all these GPS create an issue with that if you are not familiar with the area and sometimes I miss.a turn but at least it will tell you the next place to turn. Garmin, you have some real website issues, many companies such as mine use laptops for most of our business.I haven't tried that out yet but realize that the accuracy depends upon the local reports, not nuvi. The two are very similar. The software works slightly different but it's no problem to figure out. Living in Nova Scotia, Canada I've noticed that the directions to my house take me on a loop off the main road and back on it. Not good.

Friends with a Tom Tom didn't have a problem. The nuvi does have an option of using either US miles or Canadian kilometers which is why I didn't buy the Tom Tom. I like the information on the main screen which includes the next turn, type and direction of that turn, the distance to the next turn, your speed, and the arrow to get to the Main Menu. The screen itself is very easy to read in all kinds of light, although sometimes I have to take off my sun glasses. This unit is much quicker to pick up the signals at start up. This unit does not have lane assist, but it's not too bad with the little graphic of your next turn. I should have remembered to look for that feature. This unit is also missing the blue tooth feature, but I'd rather have a dedicated unit for that. The only real downside is that Garmin will not transfer a life-time map update subscription from one unit to the other. Since I gave my 260W to my husband, this isn't a big problem, but it might be for someone else. Users drive carefully. Pay attention to the road, not your nuvi. For current recommendations, please refer to our auto GPS buyers guide. All of the new units in the 1200, 1300 and 1400 series come with customizable data fields and the ability to utilize the pedestrian and mass transit features on Garmin’s CityXplorer maps. They also have text-to-speech, so you’ll hear “drive one-half mile, then turn left on Elm Street,” instead of just “drive one-half mile, then turn left.” You can follow that link for more details, but basically, POIs can be rated and you can also report errors, removing them from your searches. When not navigating, the options are: The top three fields can then be customized with the options discussed previously. This gives you the ability to display two more fields than can be shown in the traditional display mode.

This is a nice feature, but I wish Garmin would allow you to customize this to changes colors at 5 or 10 MPH over the limit, so it’s not constantly switching back and forth if you drive right at the limit. Tracklogs can be cleared and the feature disabled for those of you with something to hide.A folder icon appears in the upper left corner of city and street search screens. Tap it for a list of recent entries. This is so much better than having to re-enter your hometown all the time! If lane assist, the ability to customize the map display, or use of CityXplorer maps is important to you, I highly recommend this unit. Check out this Garmin auto GPS comparison tool or my own Garmin nuvi comparison chart Connect with him on Twitter, Facebook or Google Plus. I have a Garmin 1350, but I don’t know how to display two or three fields at the same time. And when i press to go someplace or write a street or city, garmin 1350 takes me to the borders of the country and then to the location that i have pointed out. For any place.I think i has some kind of a bug.Anyone else experienced something like this? You recommended to buy the cheaper one because they are comparable. Since price is the same, which model do you prefer. Thanks for your input. The 1xxx series has had some problems with shutdowns, but I think a firmware update may have fixed that. How is Sam’s return policy. If its pretty good, I think I’d go for the 1350. There’s a fuse in the tip of the part that goes into the cigarerrete lighter. Is it blown? Used to be quick, can’t put in any details until it loads. Any thoughts. Cheers I love my nuvi 1350 and would highly reccomend it.
