Now it's time to consider how you can maximize the fun and excitement your equipment offers. This. However, improper use can result in potential electrical shock or fire hazards. Press the RESET button located on the back of the SFA1180, and the unit should return to normal operation. 2.W hen the low battery icon appears on the display, either the internal battery needs to be recharged, or the “AA”. The longer you turn the hand crank, the more power you are generating to charge the battery, and the Radio listening time will be extended (Radio reception only). Notes: The unit may require 5 - 6 minutes of constant cranking if the LCD clock display and LED light do not work, and the battery is completely drained. Make sure the positive and negative ends of the batteries are facing the correct direction. Note: For optimum performance, alkaline-type batteries are recommended. The internal battery of the SFA1180 will begin to charge automatically when your computer is ON. Charge the unit a minimum of 7 to 8 hours prior to using, and the radio should not be used while charging with your computer. LED lights Red when fully charged. Battery Charging via Crank LED flashes Red during charging. Battery Charging via Solar Power Solar charging LED lights yellow.Press and hold the buttons to speed up the forward or reverse scanning of the digits. Alarm indicator appears on display if beeping alarm or wake to radio is selected. 10. Tap the MENU button to exit set up menu. Wake to ALARM or WEATHER RADIO 1. The volume level of radio alarm increases gradually until it reaches the factory preset level. Tap the button until timer shows “OFF”. Tap the SELECT button, sleep timer indicator “zZ” will disappear from display immediately. 5. The Department of Commerce’ s National Oceanic and Aerospace Administration (NOAA) provides NOAA W eather Radio as a public service. NOAA has more than 550 stations in the 50 states and near adjacent coastal waters, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Vir gin Islands and the U.S. Pacific T erritories. The unit will sound an audible alert tone when an alert tone is received. W orking with other Federal agencies and the FCC’ s new Emergency Alert System (EAS), NOAA is the single source for weather and emer gency information available to the public.NOTE: The radio must be in ALERT mode to receive the NOAA Alert signal. Choosing A Location For Installation The WX-17 is designed for portable operation. In portable and non-portable operations, the best location is the one that can clearly receive the NOAA weather broadcast. The best location to install the unit is: - Clear of any obstructions or metal surface. - Near windows of large openings for best radio r eception. - Near an AC Power Outlet (if desired). -N ear to where the user(s) would normally stay — e.g. in a bedroom, kitchen, or in an office. NOTE: Keep the radio away from interference sour ces- e.g. motors, computers, TV’ s or microwave ovens. To avoid damage to the pr oduct, do not expose to direct sunlight, extreme heat or humid environments for prolonged periods.Close compartment door. Do not mix old and new batteries. Do mix battery types. Use alkaline batteries.
AC Operation: Using the AC to DC adapter supplied with the unit will disconnect the batteries automatically. Plug in the wall adapter into a 120V AC outlet and plug into jack (6 V olt DC). Only use the adapter supplied with the unit. Y ou must select ALERT to receive the W eather Alert signals.When you hear the loud signal, you MUST select WB to hear further information about the emergency. IMPORT ANT! The fact that you can get clear voice reception does not guarantee that an emergency alert will trigger your unit’ s alert tone. T o test actual recep- tion, your unit must receive the weekly T est or Emergency Alert Signal Br oadcast. Follow the instructions in the previous sections and set the radio to ALERT to receive T est Alert Broadcasts from the NWS station. The National W eather Service (NWS) broadcasts a T est Alert every week on Wednesday between 11AM and 12Noon. T o find out the specific test schedule in your area, contact your local National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) or National W eather Service (NWS) office. These offices are listed in the telephone book under “US Government”. When you are traveling with your radio and want to use it in a new location, make sure you have the correct W eather Channel (1-7). Verify that the unit can be activated by the test broadcast in the new location.

Sargent 2.0 out of 5 stars Notably it does have an alert mode where audio is muted until the homeland security folks or NWS sends an alert tone that will activate the radio's alarm. It may be powered by 4 AA batteries or by a supplied wall power supply (UL listed). It has a about a 20 inch telescoping antenna. Overall audio quality is sufficient and clear for this small radio. AM reception is poor: poor sensitivity and selectivity. Yet it will receive the major AM stations so long as they are moderate in strength or better. Forget weaker stations. FM is better with more reasonable sensitivity and selectivity. I was able to receive and separate a dozen or more FM stations in my above average FM rf strength area. My local NWS channel (4) was received adequately Sensitivity is probably average at best. So it will likely not receive the weaker NWS signals. The performance is about what I expected.I was interested in basically just the weather broadcasts. But it is difficult to find a portable unit that doesn't offer AM and FM. The radio receives excellent reception. And the speaker sounds exceptionally well for such a small portable in my opinion. The only major drawback to this radio to me is its terrible battery compartment design. The unit takes four AA batteries, one on top of the other, rather than straight in a row. This requires that you squeeze back the little holding spring at the top to insert the battery beneath.
Its always been my opinion that all battery compartments on anything are designed by the sadist on staff at whatever company is producing it. But this one offers very little lee way even by the generous standards of terrible battery compartments. In my first try at inserting the batteries I managed to break one of the little retaining springs. Rather than return the whole unit, I fixed the problem by inserting a small piece of aluminum foil to allow the battery to make contact. Since this radio will be almost exclusively used as a portable unit by most customers, I felt compelled to mention that the battery department leaves a whole bunch to be desired. One other observation. This radio is just a smidgen over and inch wide at the bottom. Although it has two little rubberized feet, it is so narrow that unless it is placed on a dead level surface, it tips over easily. This radio would be useless on a camping trip or picnic if you expect to place this on a rock, or the ground. It will continuously tip over and drive you crazy. The three star rating on this radio is for the good reception of the weather forecasts, and the excellent FM reception as well. Its overall design is however very substandard, and not very well thought out.It is replacing a much more expensive brand which never worked as well as this one. The weather monitor is easily operated and an added plus.I wanted a radio with weather. No so. Will not pick up any weather station on any band. Complete waste of time and money. Would return it but I threw the box away before I checked it. Yeah, I know, not very smart. That won't happen again. I went to Walmart and bought a Midland for less money. Do yourself a favor and get a Midland.The volume control has failed twice. I Buying an extended warranty is recommended. You will quite likely need it!I do not know what is wrong with it. I think this product is cheap and not worth the effort.Thought seriously about returning the radio but it worked outside.
Does not work in our bedroom which is where we need the radio at night. The sticker that has the radio tuning stations on it is crooked inside the radio case so tuning is somewhat challenging. The instructions are not clear. I still do not know if the radio has to be on for the emergency alert to sound or if it comes on automatically when set to alert. Anybody know? The WX-150 receives digitally encoded civil and weather emergency alert messages transmitted from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Weather Radio (NWR) broadcast towers. Page 7 Trouble Shooting Problem POWER light does not come on Possible Cause and Solution AC power may not be connected. Make sure AC adaptser is properly plugged into the radio and the wall outlet. POWER light is blinking AC power has been removed. Unit is running on backup battery power. Check AC adapter connections to restore power. Siren does not sound 1. Radio is set to Voice not Siren. Check Alert Mode setting. 3. Alert is blocked. To Unblock alerts see the Setting Siren Mode instructions on page 22. Page 8 Location of Controls Alert Description Table: The table below lists the alerts broadcast by NOAA. At the factory, your radio has been programmed with some alerts Blocked (B) as noted below. In addition, some NOAA alerts are Unblockable (UB) as noted below. Once connected, these devices will automatically be activated when the radio receives an advisory, watch or warning for the duration of the radio siren or until you press the Radio OFF button. Page 10 WX-150 Menu Tree Normal Operation MENU The WX-150 has 2 alarm settings. To set the time refer to the Setting the ALarm Clock section on page 19. To activate the alarms: Press and hold the ALARM button for 3 seconds. Press and hold for 3 seconds ALERT MODE Using the Alarm Clock The icon and time setting for Alarm1 will be displayed on the screen. Page 11 Upon selection of the warning level, press the SAVE button to save and exit to the ADD ALERTS prompt of the main menu list. To add another alert at this time, press the NEXT button to enter the ADD ALERTS menu and repeat steps 3-5. To return to normal operation press the MENU button. Note: if you exit the ADD ALERTS menu by pressing the MENU button, your changes will not be saved. The WX-150 uses 4 AA batteries for back-up power.

Place the unit where it can receive an emergency alert signal broadcast and where you can hear its alert tone or see the message indicator lights. Page 15 Chapter 3 - Advanced Programming Options Setting the Alert Mode Your WX-150 has 2 programmable Alert Modes. 1. Voice Mode - Sounds a warning siren for 10 sec.To set the Alert Mode: 1. Press and hold the menu button for 3 seconds. The radio will display the main menu list showing ALERT MODE. 2. Press the NEXT button to enter the Alert Mode menu. The alert icon will begin blinking. Page 16 Chapter 2 - S.A.M.E. Programming Your radio is capable of being programmed with up to 20 different FIPS location codes. The first code has been programmed at the factory - 000000 - to respond to all messages within your area. To program the radio with the FIPS code for your area, follow the steps below. ALERT MODE 1.
Press and hold the MENU buttion for 3 seconds. ALERT MODE is displayed on the screen. COUNTY CODE 2. Press the UP (?) button twice to get to the COUNTY CODE menu. Please try another search. The first two digits will begin to blink, and you will enter the first two numbers of the code. You will enter the next two digits of the code. This is known as the PIL code. By default, the siren is disabled. Click here for programming codes for your county. This radio can be programmed with 25 different SAME codes. Their size can vary depending on the weather situation. Tornado Watches are usually issued for a duration of 4-8 hours and normally are issued well in advance of the actual occurrence of severe weather. During the watch, people should review tornado safety rules and be prepared to move a place of safety if threatening weather approaches. During the watch, the NWS will keep you informed on what is happening in the watch area and when the watch has expired or been cancelled. Tornado Warnings can be issued without a Tornado Watch already in effect and are usually issued for a duration of around 30 minutes.
Tornado Warnings are issued by the National Weather Service and will include where the tornado was located and what towns will be in its path. If the thunderstorm which is causing the tornado is also producing torrential rains, this warning may also be combined with a Flash Flood Warning. After the warning has been issued, the affected NWS office will follow it up periodically with Severe Weather Statements. These statements will contain updated information on the tornado and they will also let the public know when warning is no longer in effect. They are usually issued for a duration of 4-8 hours and are normally issued well in advance of the actual occurrence of severe weather. During the watch, people should review severe thunderstorm safety rules and be prepared to move a place of safety if threatening weather approaches. Like with a tornado watch, the NWS will keep you informed on what is happening in the watch area and when the watch has expired or been cancelled. Severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes with little or no advance warning. Lightning frequency is not a criteria for issuing a severe thunderstorm warning. Severe Thunderstorm Warnings are usually issued for a duration of 1 hour and can be issued without a Severe Thunderstorm Watch already in effect. Severe Thunderstorm Warnings will include where the storm was located, what towns will be affected by the severe thunderstorm and the primary threat associated with the severe thunderstorm warning.
