Since I finally found the owners manual pdf of the BX-3mkII, I realize that although they both have the same 4 channel power rating (125wattsx4), the mkII is rated at 400 watts into 2ch and the original is rated at 300 into 2ch (both at 8 ohms). Even the vintagedbx site has it listed wrong.The ones that face each other take most of the load.With mine (Mk.I), you had to goose the volume a bit before the relays kicked in. I deliberated quite a bit on which power amp to keep, because the DBX and Yamaha amps really ran neck-and-neck in terms of performance and overall sound. The Yamaha won out, primarily because of the synergy and aesthetics of a matching system. In the preamp world, though, the Yamaha pre kicked the DBX pre's posterior. That DBX tuner, or it's ADC T-200 twin, is no slouch either. It doesn't quiet FM noise as much as the Yamaha, but on good stations I actually prefer the sound of the DBX.The mkI is a little worse, tho. It's on my to-do list. My CX-800 mops the dbx up. What are the part numbers on the board and I'll see if my extremely limited troubleshooting skills can see why they may have everheated. It may simply have to do with the bias setting too high. I believe the BX3 has a slow-start circuit to lower inruch current, so if the amp stays in protect mode, maybe those have a tendancy to overheat. In this arrangement the BX-3 delivers an awesome 300 WATTS of power per channel, continuous RMS, at 8 ohms, from 20-20k with no more than 0.01% total harmonic distortion.
