Prices subject to change without notice. No frills, and all thrills.Put the same amp in front of 50 different musicians and you’re not likely to get the same opinion twice. That’s OK. Some folks like gut strings, others like nylon.Rather, the point of this writing is to tell you what my V-Series makes me feel and hear. Ultimately, however, you should trust your own ears and wallet. You are your own best judge, even novice, even lofty professional. Music is wonderful and the more colors we introduce, the better. And I bought one amp to serve our (my son and me) needs. I don’t recommend this approach, but it was useful for us from the standpoint of housing space and underlying need. My son wanted LOUD and easy to push the tubes into breakup. My son was looking to compete with a drum set and a small band in small venues and recording. I wanted a way to jam, comp, record, and just enjoy making noise. After playing a bunch of amps (including some solid state amps), I chose the Crate V-Series V18 212. Here’s my story (and I’m stickin’ to it;-)) They’re becoming scarce to buy in stores, so if you’re interested, play one very soon, or find an online store willing to take returns. These aren’t the high-end USA-made Crate tube amps, but they’re still Class-A, and you can tell it. If you’re looking for a particular sound, read up on the power tube types. It’s moderately heavy (about 50 lbs, nicely balanced at the handle), it’s loud as a pissed three-year-old, and it has a good fundamental sound. I’m happy with out decision and my experience with this amp has made me contemplate augmenting my studio room with a little V5 combo for when I’m comping.

The Crate V series isn’t available in new retail any more, but you can see other great Crate amps here at zZounds.com Very nice touch for an amp at this price point. It has more than just volume or volume and tone (as its price-wise competitors are built). It has a real reverb, three bands of EQ, and drive to go with the volume. The pair of Crate-branded speakers are fairly run-of-the-mill, but they suffice. There is only one input. These things are not unusual in this price range, but it’s important to point this out. The tubes seem to be just right in their quality and adjustment. The Speakers are just what you would expect from ceramic-magnet 12s, the control quality is quiet, smooth, and feels good. The cabinet seems decently tight and well-assembled.Everything still works great, there are few tears in anything, and the sound is still very, very good. The standby switch is a great feature and makes this budget amp a top contender. It’s easy to over-drive the tubes and start crunching away. But, I love playing it in overdrive. If you are looking for clean, these are not the droids you are looking for. Move along. If you’re rockin’, bluesin’, or doing some crunchy country, this amp delivers in a big way. You can even play it without an overdrive pedal at low volumes to get some nice tube distortion. Really, the right way to approach this amp is to plug in your guitar, and dial in the different aspects until you like it. I’ve never seen an amp that sounds great with every guitar at every setting. It’s a nice alternative to solid-staters for crunch delivery and guts. Crate: Clean is important to lots of buyers. Bookmark the permalink. My first real amp was a Crate GT-200H, a very cool hybrid head with 2 valve and 2 solid state channels. Yngwie Malmsteen used to advertise the combo version as his practice amp, so there ya go. It’s a 33 watt, all valve Class A amp with four 12AX7 preamp valves.

One 12AX7 greets the guitar signal pretty much right there at the input jack; two operate on the clean channel, and another is added when you select the overdrive channel. There are two more 12AX7s following the spring reverb and effects loop. The V33 has two 12” speakers fed by a power section running on four EL84 cathode biased output valves. There’s a Boost button to engage a 10dB boost at 900Hz for adding more guts to the midrange, and a presence button which provides some extra sparkle. It’s a great read, and the writer resists the urge to get too techy, without dumbing things down either. The clean channel has a great sparkle, giving way to a satisfyingly hot chunk when cranked up. The gain level never quite makes it to distortion territory even when pushed. The overdrive channel has a warm, slightly mushy compression which seems to love single coil pickups for a bit of Hendrix growl. Humbuckers give the amp a more fusion-ish tone. The gain never quite gets out of control, but this is an amp for more refined players who need to hear exotic intervals and careful note articulation, rather than a box of doom for metal monsters. A friend in High School had one and I bought it off of him. This was the first digital amp I used. I liked the limited number of patches. They are seemed usable for something. I hate those amps that have 999 patches and maybe 30 of them are mildly usable. The tap tempo feature was nice and revolutionary to me back 11 years ago when I was a newer player. This amp was greatly under powered. I don't think it could have powered a gig without PA support. It claims it was rated at 60 watts, but it equated to a 20 watt practice amp. It is a bit bulky, but it was manageable to move around. The amp worked great as long as I owned it. I imagine once it breaks it will end up in a landfill somewhere as repairing this is probably about as intense as a Jaguar or the Millennium Falcon. Crate paved the way for some of the crazy digital amps that are out there today with this model. Would make a cool studio amp or practice amp to offer you plenty of sounds at your fingertips, but it just isn't powerful enough to gig with. This review was originally published on Did you find this review helpful? yes no. I like the volume it pushes and the tone that it pushes. It is a very good amp for distorted tones and on board effects. It is a little difficult to get a clean tone but it has a great clean preset. It is extremely versatile. It is an extremely heavy amp weighing in at around 70 lbs. Thats a lot for a little guy like me. I don't like the difficulty to get a clean tone and acoustic tone. I haven't found a use for turning it up past 5 it is just too damn loud. It is a 212 combo with celestion speakers. It is a 100 watt combo amp and pushes every bit of it. It has 16 amp models to choose from that give you a varience in sounds you can get and use. The effects are very cool for getting spacy sounds out of your guitar. The quality is top notch for a solid state amp. It is a good starting amp for a gigging musician.

It is relatively inexspensive compared to its digital counterparts. It has served its purpose of being very very loud on several occasions and I love playing through this amp every day I've owned it. Incredibly enough it had been returned by some poor guitarist who had no idea how to maximize the dx's full potential. The great thing about the dx is that is in three very easy to transport parts. Underneath the speaker cab is a roll away system and ample carry handles. The head is thin but some what heavy I can hear why with all of effects and possible combinations of such. So far it has been a most reliable tool in as many shows that I put it threw. The only thing I can see as a downer is that the dx wont get up and make me breakfast in the morning. The dx is very well built. It is both solid and space friendly. I have already put alot of hard hours on the dx and she is still holding up quite well. If you want an amp that has both practicality and power then purchase the dx. Trust me all of my fellow guitarists want one once they see and hear what this machine can do, and you will too. P.S. the dx is midi ready and with the 412 option makes a nice stereo attack. This review was originally published on Did you find this review helpful? yes no. I love the versitility of having 16 different amp models in one, and also having 16 digital effects on board. This amp has got it all. There is nothing to dislike about this amp. Quality construction from top to bottom, this is not an amp for the meek at heart, your gonna have to eat your wheaties to carry this bad boy around. It's heavy, but it comes with a sturdy handle. Also it looks good. It has your basic black exterior with a copper face and copper weave through the speaker screen. My thoughts on this amp are from sweet to screamin and everything in between. Every time I play with someone new, they sit there astonished.

They ask me,( Where ya gettin all that sound from. Is that just the amp. How'd ya make them sounds with no effects pedals?) Of course I say well you just have to practice, and you too someday in the distant future can sound like that. But all they really need is the DX-212.
