I did just about everything wrong you can do but through research, blogs, comments, and questions, I now have perfect embroidery work. I do have some comments or advice to newcomers. And this is specific to this machine only as I have no experience with any other embroidery machines. Rayon works but it's more fussy. Adjust the bobbin casing tension. I believe another user had recommended this also and I concur. It's easy to do and can literally be done on one practice piece of fabric in one hoop. Do not use sticky fabri solvy or any sticky topping stabilizer. Only use non-stick toppings. They say it doesn't, but it will gum up your thread and needle and back-up into your machine causing birds nests. Once I stopped using sticky toppings and stabilizers, my birds nest problems ended completely. Use a mid-weight cut-away stabilizer for t-shirts. Do not use tear away stabilizers. I have done probably 200 t-shirts now and I can actually leave the room while my machine does it's work. It's that foolproof. (Although, I don't recommend doing this as a rule) Anyway, I give the Brother 700II a 5 star rating. So I didn't need another machine to stitch things together. I have a pick of 4 machines for that. Okay, back to the PE700ii. It's very easy to use, very instinctive. You can use the Quick guide to help figure out anything you don't know. When I tried out the machine, the first thing I noticed is that the tension was waaaay off. I mean, there was little to no bobbin thread showing on the back side. Only top thread was being expressed on the back. You know, the cheap skate in me started thinking that this was going to get expensive. So I went back to the reviews. I had read many reviews about this machine. Almost all of them had to do with tension issues. Some said to use the preloaded bobbins. Some said the bobbins you load yourself worked better. I have to tell you, none of it has to do with which bobbin you use (well, as long as it is correct for the machine). What it does have to do with- the bobbin tension is way too tight. The factory preset is completely and utterly wrong. If you are loading your bobbin into the casing, you should be able to easily pull the thread. There should be a little resistance, but not a ton. There should be a slight drag. The factory preset bobbin tension is all wrong. I pulled out the little bobbin casing and realized that it was very tight.

Scrap that! You have to rotate it 1.5 turns. I know that sounds extreme. If I was a new seamstress, I would be freaking out about now. But wait! They say to never monkey with bobbin tensions on new machines. Yeah, well, that's all good and such, but this machine needs it. After doing that, the machine worked great. The bobbin thread is showing the way it is supposed to. Keep adjusting that screw, back and forth and you should see some change. You want the top thread to express on the bottom a little bit- this is embroidery after all. But you don't want to see all top thread all the time.
