There are more tones here than any other overdrive pedal I've owned. With the drive up high and the color knob fairly low, one can conjure up some near-Marshall or HiWatt sounds. With the color and drive extremely low, you can produce some Fender Tweed sounds without a harsh high end. I personally like to keep the color knob below 12 o'clock for a warm overdrive sound, but the charm in this pedal is that I've seen other guitarists say they prefer it in the opposite direction. Now for the negative. It's not a noiseless pedal. With the drive knob at 12 o'clock, it emits a pretty harsh buzzing sound compared to other drive pedals. I personally wish it had more output, as I find myself pushing the output past 12 o'clock more than I'd prefer. For this reason, I think it sounds best when pushed with another high-output boost pedal like the BOSS Blues Driver. So overall, I'd say it shouldn't be the ONLY overdrive pedal one should own, but I think everyone should own one at some point. I feel like any guitarist can find a way to use this pedal, which is the greatest compliment I can give to a guitar pedal. This thing rivals my Marshall-style pedals in terms of tone. It just needs more volume.The color knob is what sets it apart - can blend overdrive and distortion as you desire - set about 2 or 3 o'clock sounds really good. It is a little noisy compared to other newer pedals I have, but minor concern for my needs.It was just a little bit more difficult than I guessed it would be but not too hard for someone with some electronics kit building experience. I removed all the parts first and then installed the new ones, as I felt confident I would be able to do it correctly. I understand what the instructions say about checking the pedal with every component installed but I did not want to go through all that trouble.<a href=""></a></p><p> I would not reccomend this as a first project for someone with no soldering experience but if you can solder and desolder joints you should be ok. You will want to use a good iron with a small chisel tip as the solder pads are small. I expected the led to be a bit brighter based on the description but it works just fine, it came with a clear one that lights yellow but it is not much brighter than the stock red one. Surely looks better with the yellow to me. The pedal is a lot warmer sounding now and it has a LOT more clarity and sweetness. I notice the tone knob seems to affect the overall volume more than it did before but it seems to be a lot more useful in shaping the tone now, this is easily balanced out by the level knob. This mod takes the fizziness out of the pedal and makes it sing a lot better. I have two OS-2 pedals so I am able to A-B this to the unmodded pedal. At first I did not realize how drastic the improvement was until I tried the original pedal. The original really sounds like crap compared to the modded pedal and I did like it a lot before I modded one of them. I don't like the OD or distortion alone if you set the color knob to either extreme but you get some great tones between 9 and 3 o'clock positions. I did not really like either extreme before the mod either to be fair. Considering what this mod takes this pedal from and to, I'd say the guy who put the kit together has a good ear for tone. Again this mod smooths and fattens this pedal up a lot. Great for classic rock. This pretty much covers my needs for now. I will be looking into more of these kits from this supplier. It was well put together and has good color photos for you to use. The instructions are great for someone with just a little basic experience. If you can't understand them you don't need to be attempting to mod your own gear.</p><p> So I took a used pedal I bought for less than half the cost of a new one and bought this kit, did the install myself and saved a couple hundred dollars from what a comprable sounding boutique pedal would have costed me. All said I enjoyed doing the work myself and I will be looking at more kits from this supplier.I don't check the operation of the pedal after every change.I feel it is too hard on the wire attachments to the PC board if you are repeatedly plugging and unplugging the pedal to check the sound. Just be methodical removing parts and replacing them. Don't yank on stubborn pieces; just apply the solder wick and reheat. If you can gently pull on the part (other side of the board) while heating, it should come away. A small set of needle-nose pliers or hemostats can be very helpful. Don't overheat the pc board at any rate.this could lift the solder contact away from the board. I chose to leave the original LED (red) in place. This step isn't going to affect the final sound of the pedal. Many musicians prefer the un-modified sound of the Boss pedals, and that is fine. Your ear is the important factor in all of this.With humbuckers this sounds amazing driving a valve amp - especially with the gain backed off and the volume up. This is where it really shines. With the knob anywhere around the middle you get a firm, thumpy palm-muted overdrive with varying degrees of sizzling overtones from the distortion. It reminds me of Clapton's early Marshall sound more than anything, and that's no bad thing. It works exceptionally well with darker guitars such as Les Pauls because it removes a lot of the low end before you hit the amp by setting the output gain to maximum. When this low en is removed it gives you a much clear and punchy drive signal. Lots of boutique takes of this pedal do not cut the low end as much, and they have a much higher output level. As every player and their setup is different, noise can come from many different sources. The best way to avoid noise is to use quality equipment, look after it and have it serviced. But that’s often easier said than done. Simply put, you know when noise is present and you definitely want it gone. Many guitar players who play at high volume with high gain find themselves in an ongoing battle with noise, hum or unwelcome feedback. Used by everyone from bedroom players to international touring bands like Metallica, Slipknot, U2 and The Dillinger Escape Plan among many others, the BOSS NS-2 is an industry standard in noise suppression. Its innovative design is as effective today as it was at the time of its release. Whether you are looking to minimise unwanted noise in your rig, or perhaps even use it as a tone-tool for sculpting aggressive rhythm guitar textures, depends on how you connect it to your rig, and understanding just how it works. GETTING CONNECTED At first glance, you’ll see the NS-2 has 4 jacks.</p><p> These jacks allow the NS-2 to be configured in 2 different ways, depending on your rig and your desired outcome. For the purposes of this article, we’ll refer to these two different configurations as the SIMPLE method and the ADVANCED method. SIMPLE METHOD This is the simplest way to use the NS-2. Simply insert the NS-2 into your signal chain as the last item AFTER your noisy pedals or amp. The limitation with the Simple method is that at high noise levels (common with high gain pedals and amps), the Noise Suppressor has difficulty in determining what is noise and what is your actual guitar signal. This can manifest a problem when playing long sustained notes with high preamp gain. As the note starts to die out, the Noise Suppressor in Simple mode may end up “clamping down” and cutting the end of the note off. This effect can actually be desirable for some players. Guitarists who play high-gain, staccato rhythms often relish the “choppy” effect that the Simple Method can deliver. If you are looking to use a Noise Suppressor to “tighten up” your high gain rhythms, then the Simple connection method may be best for you. To combat this problem, the NS-2 was designed with an intelligent “detection circuit” designed to differentiate between your guitar signal and unwanted noise. To take advantage of this functionality, we can connect using the ADVANCED method. When correctly connected using this method, the NS-2 will “detect” your guitar’s signal and allow the noise suppression circuit to activate only as your guitar signal dies out, resulting in a more natural guitar sound. The NS-2 was the first pedal to achieve this style of noise suppression and remains an industry standard still today. Once you have the pedal connected in either method, the NS-2 becomes an invaluable tool. The key to optimum results, is understanding just what the main control knobs do. NS-2 CONTROLS The THRESHOLD control sets how sensitive you wish the Noise Suppressor to be, i.e.</p><p> the “threshold” at which the Noise Suppression begins to do its work. Setting the THRESHOLD all the way to MAX will cut nearly anything, including guitar signal. If you want to back it off a bit, you’ll also be able to still get nice feedback swells if you desire. A bit of breathing room here can be good. The DECAY control allows you to set to how fast or slow you want the signal to fade out when the suppression circuitry kicks in. Slower DECAY settings will give a more natural overall guitar sound, and avoid the end of long notes being “chopped off” as they die out. Faster DECAY settings are favoured amongst many metal guitarists for the way in which it creates a “choppy” sound that suits tight, high gain rhythm playing. The MODE SELECTOR knob offers options for different ways to utilise the NS-2. In REDUCTION mode, the NS-2 will suppress unwanted noise, as determined by the Threshold. To activate Reduction mode, simply select it via the Mode Selector and press the pedal ON. If the pedal is not switched on in Mute mode, the pedal will work the same as it would in Reduction mode. Essentially, Mute mode does not have a bypass feature. It will reduce your noise but will kill all sound when you step on the pedal. WHAT ABOUT EFFECTS? Ok, good question. You can absolutely use effects and other pedals with the NS-2! However. Keep in mind that the NS-2 has a DECAY feature. Best way to use reverb and delay effects with the NS-2 is to put them AFTER it does its work. You can also put modulation pedals here if you want too. We’ve discussed using overdrive pedals with the NS-2 earlier in this article. But, if you’re using the 4-cable or “X-method”, the only pedal you should plug into before the NS-2 is your tuner. Whichever setup you choose, the BOSS NS-2 Noise Suppressor will clean up your overall sound while maintaining the dynamics and nuances of your playing.
